Anti-Valentines Day

topic posted Tue, January 25, 2005 - 6:54 PM by  Kat
At some point or another, we have all done something to rebel against this stupid cutsey holiday of which we arent involved. What is it you've done?

I recall one year a friend and I decided to make our protest visual.

I had been dumped not long before the holidays by the couple I had been dating, which wasnt only hard, but achingly so. Some of the more fun moments involved being so tied in my finances to theirs that for a while I couldnt move out, and so sat in the living room listening as they had sex every night oblivious tomy presence in the house, and going to work each day to see him sitting across the building. I was not a happy girl. But goddamned if V-day wasnt coming up, and I refused to let the SOB see me upset. My friend was in a similar place in life (different, less twisted story), and we knocked our heads together trying to figure out what to do to defy the holiday.

I am still most enamored of the outfits we came up with. I have a shirt that says "Love Sucks" on it, and a pair of nice black f*ck-me jeans. She went with a plain black t-shirt and peasent skirt. It wasnt planned, but we looked like one another's date. We also wore chains and padlocks for belts, and any makeup was of the dark gothic variety. I wanted to paint "not a chance" on my lock, but didnt.

I also didnt get the bag of anti-valentines candy (you can get the discouraging heart candy from despair.com), but did make stickers proclaiming disdain by drawing cracks in a bunch of heart stickers and writing nasty phrases on them, then handing them out at work.

We didnt really do anything too special that night, but I had such a good time I decided to do it every year I had the chance. My heart was raw and cracked completly in two, and I had a pretty good valentines anyway.

Anyone else?

    Al Capone day.... LOL!!!
    www.02-14.com/anti-valentines-day.html

Not everybody is thrilled about Valentine's Day. On February 14th of every year there are just as many if not more single people as there are couples who have to spend the whole day being reminded of their loneliness. Well some people have begun to fight back against all the mushy talkers and lovers on Valentine's Day. Besides the common protests of wearing all black on the big day, one person in particular has started another celebration on that day.

February 14, 1998, will be the 5th annual Al Capone Day. Al Capone was the most famous Chicago bootlegger of whiskey during the Prohibition days of the 1920's. When Al Capone reigned in the streets of Chi-Town, the homemade hootch ran free, and the blood ran even freer. February 14, 1929 is actually the date of the great Valentine's Day Massacre. Although it was never proven the Capone was responsible, all believe that Capone's men gunned down several of a rival bootlegger, Bugs Moran's, henchmen on that date.

Five years ago Mark Kinney, a graduate of Western Kentucky University and a broadcaster was sick of being single on valentine's day and feeling left out, so he started the idea of celebrating the Al Capone massacre instead.

"It started as a radio broadcast on WWHR, the student run station at Western Kentucky university, as sort of an Anti-Valentine's day celebration," Kinney says.

"Sure it's rather tasteless to celebrate a bunch of people being killed, but it beats being sickened to death by all the mushiness that comes to the surface on the typical Valentine's Day."

Al Capone day has not quite caught on as much as its rival has, but then again it is only five years old.

"I'm trying to spread this new holiday, to make it an event for all the people who are unwillingly single during this sap-drenched time of year."

So remember, if you find yourself eating dinner for one this Valentine's Day, and you're sick of seeing people smooch in front of you, there is an alternative. Grab a case of whiskey, a tommy gun, and join Mark Kinney in the celebration of Al Capone Day.

I throw killer Anti-Valentines Day parties. I think I talked about it before so I won't go too into it. Only single friends are allowed, we all pick Love Cursed poetry to read (Buk is my fave), I play the anti-love songs comp that I made and decorate with broken hearts, Cupid holding his own head, etc. and make drink with heart shaped ice cubes that crack upon being dropped in the glass. We get drunk and stoned and dance and tell stories. It's so much fun!!!

Last year we had all planned to egg couples on VD... but changed our minds and made some cookies with the eggs instead. ;)

If anyone is in the SF area and digs rock and roll... My friend Judy told me about a great art show to go to. It's Patti Boyd's art show (she of George Harrison and Layla/Clapton fame) and she is showing her rock photos on Feb 14th. emol.org/virtualmall/v...pattiboyd.html

I am going to be celebrating the world wide release of the Love Cursed CD. Probably drink copious amounts of champagne, and hang with friends.

I went into the drug store today to pick up a prescription and was confronted by racks upon racks of pink hearts. Valentines Day is, what, February 14th? it's still January, right?

I hate this holiday. Actually, I hate most holidays. As we know, holidays aren't for celebrating anything but the deeply-held religious belief that topping off your credit card will, in fact, fix the economy. The holiday spirit loves you. Do you love the holiday spirit? It is treason not to be happy.

I hate Valentines Day. Most shades of pink give me a rash. I've seen hearts. Granted, most of them were soaked in formaldehyde. even if they weren't, they wouldn't look a thing like the pink monstrosities on the rack at the drug store. Where's the blood? Am I really supposed to believe that the sanitized symbol has any relationship to the real thing, as if a broken heart could be replaced by an off-the-shelf piece of neon-colored non-recyclable cardboard filled with chocolates that taste like dryer lint?

You know what Valentines Day really is? It's a message that if you (yes, you!) don't have a significant other of the opposite gender to exchange overpriced flowers and flavorless chocolate with, you are economically useless to this country, morally deficient, psychologically sub-standard, and a waste of dna. Have you gotten laid recently? No? Don't you know that all the tanned, gleaming, over-endowed men and women in the beer commercials are laughing at you? They're saying, "get with the program, american consumer of form over substance! it doesn't matter whether or not you are really in love, as long as all of your friends think you are! And turn green in time for Saint Patrick's Day!"

*now making plans to blow up a hallmark store

"Where's the blood? Am I really supposed to believe that the sanitized symbol has any relationship to the real thing..."

And in the historical trivia of the day, we have...the heart.

The reason we have the heart as a symbol of love and romance is not because it is a representation of ahuman organ. In fact, its an ancient symbol that actually depicts that very special heart-shape made by a woman bending over. Its actually a depiction of the curve of her buttocks and the lines leading down to her genetalia. The original heart was a fertility symbol, and remained in use until the present day, when everyone has forgotten why the hell we have it anyway.

On that note, Iwas talking with a friend today, and we both agreed we'd like Valentines more ifit was more...well...sensual. No pink hearts, give us deep reds and rich purples and the colors blood takes when pumped into familier parts crossed with the colors of harams and aristocracy. If pink must be a part of the holiday, make it an accent, we are full grown, passionate adults, not wee girls in lacy bedrooms still dreaming of our first kiss. Give us textures, velvets and silks, the rough, the smooth, the divine, the macaab, anything but the sterilized feel of cheap paper and cardboard. For entertainment, throw masked balls, offer buffets of such food as tantalize the taste buds--none of this Shoney's crap. Hold feasts, parties, celebrations of the human body and the human heart, a place where singles can remain single without censure or pair to couples as they choose and couples can enjoy the eve in an utter lack of sappy sweetness, and instead see it as a foreplay for what the day truly represents. I want to see dancing, merriment, people flashing people, I want to see chocolates thrown to strangers, passionate lovemaking involving anywhere from only a single person to orgies on the most debauched scale.

But by all the gods, get rid of this pansy-assed crap they sell us today, and that sappy-sweet, insipidly cute little cherub they replaced Eros with, who once symbolized all that was passionate and creative, from fertility to the creative force that orders nature and brings forth life. Down with the cherub and long live the things that make our nerves tingle and our souls cry out in joy!

(For the curious, look at the difference between Eros:
                                en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eros_(god)

                                And Cupid:
                                en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cupid

And despite the similarities, you can see the watering down seems to have begin with the Romans.)

thanx choc, for bumping this thread back up...timely, my friend.

let me be reminded of the twisted poison arrow that basTURD cupid shot me with a year ago on valentine's eve. i bear the scar--probably will for a long time, of that, but i'm jaded on this holiday again. i learned my lesson. next time i have a "heart on" for someone, i'm keepin it to myself until they prove themselves worthy.
